"It didn't get me a job, but it taught me how to go about finding one. And it gives you a great base education about all the facets of the industry outside of your main interest. Basically, this DVD saves you A LOT of time."

One of the ways to pull ahead of the pack in LA is to have a strong "networking" acumen. On the importance of networking, Rob DesHotel, Executive Producer "That 70's Show" states, "Anyone you know who knows a person, even if It's ten degrees of separation work those contacts. Because I guarantee you, no matter where you are, the odds are you know someone who knows someone who knows someone."

When you make a contact, try to get their e-mail address. E-mailing is the method of choice for making and staying in contact with colleagues. Periodically, you should e-mail your contacts, keeping them up to speed on your employment situation. You want to be memorable, so that people easily recall your name. But remember, you DO NOT want to become a bother. Send your "update" e-mails occasionally and keep them short.

Once you focus in on your "career path" you can then begin a "networking bible." This is more than just an address book in your palm pilot; this is a working, living document where you describe contacts, experiences and anecdotes that you've encountered on the way. This "bible" will be extremely important when you're ready to send out your spec or when you're looking for a job. Even if you think your contacts are only lower level people, remember, these people have contacts, and so on. Be careful not to abuse this list, but it can also be your most important ally.

Also, you must read at least two of the daily trade magazines The Hollywood Reporter and Daily Variety are good choices. These publications periodically list all TV shows in production. Call each show, send resumes, try to build a relationship with the show's assistants or production coordinator. Call the studios and try and set up meetings with production executives. At times it may seem impossible, but remember it only takes one returned phone call or in-person interview to make your dreams come true.

You can never have too many contacts. Do not underestimate the need for this list.

Another important element to your success is the writing of a "journey" journal. This tool will enable you to not only track your progress, but also give you a chance to look back at various times during your journey and reflect on the good, the bad and the ugly which will enable you to judge your growth and change or alter your course if that's needed.
